What is a Food Sealer?
Most of the time when people mention food sealers they are actually taking more specifically about vacuum food sealers. Household food sealers are basically devices that seek to prolong the storage time of foodstuffs by removing air from the packaging.
How Does Vacuum Packaging Work?
Vacuum packing of food works by removing air from around the food and thereby eliminating the affects of oxidation. Oxidation itself is the process whereby oxygen creates a chemical reaction that adversely affects freshness, flavor, nutritional value, and the overall quality of the food. Simply put air is an enemy of food freshness. The oxygen and also the moisture in the air causes food to degrade over time. Vacuum packing and sealing cannot reverse the decline or improve the micro biological quality of food but it can markedly slow down spoilage and deterioration by helping to control mould, fungi and bacterial growth.
How Do Household Vacuum Food Sealers Work?
The vast majority of domestic vacuum sealers are external vacuum sealers. The food is placed in a special foodsaver bag or foodsaver roll and the front of the bag or roll placed in the machine. The machine then draws all the air out of the bag or roll and then uses a heater to seal the bag or roll shut.
